So I’m taking reviewing seriously now, and writing a book, and working full-time, and DMing a home-brew D&D, and read, game, watch movies, run a flat, support my loving other half (as she supports me) and in my non existent spare time… i breath as a hobby.
Love him or hate him, Eminem dropped his latest album recently with no build up other than a single tweet saying he didn’t want to over think this one. Well, i really don’t think he’ll be accused of overthinking it. It’s already outsold The Greatest Showman album! and the Mamma Mia 2 sound tracks, and of as his 10th studio album it’s his 9th to reach number 1.
With this album he has made it very hard to argue that he is not one of the greats. However, it’s not all good news as people are starting to wonder if he’ll ever move on with the world and whether his career should now become a legacy.
The Ringer, as the intro song to this epic story of an album is used by Eminem to speak retrospectively. He talks about how he’s tried to be more pop in the past and how that was badly received. He tries to make this album stand out from those like Revival to show a more traditional rap album.
He makes it clear from the off that he’s going in with his signature style of fast and fluid yet fully articulated and pronounced lyrics, which is his stand against the culture of mumbled rapping, that is being championed by some of the younger Lil’s of the rap community atm. He says in this song that he doesn’t like Lil’ Yachty’s stuff as he’s “Simply an MC”.
The thing is there’s a juvenile nature to some of the lyrics that betrays an real anger at things, like critique he’s had in the past and will continue to get from people like me, now, as well as his anger for the media. Now, Eminem is an expressive and emotive rapper, arguably the most expressive and this is just him being himself…. however controversial that may in other songs turn out to be.
